Power Grammar Advanced Level (Module 9 - 15)

The advanced grammar course will
further enhance students' meta-language (a "language" to talk about grammar) while building on the knowledge of grammar that students have acquired in modules 1 - 8 of the basic grammar course. To facilitate students' development into advanced language users, students will not only work on learning the rules for producing correct grammar, but also on using grammar in ways that are appropriate for different contexts and text types. Through fun games, writing, and reading activities, students will focus on a number of grammatical features that are typical for more complex text types. These features include:

- Perfect Tenses                        - Nominalization                          - Active & Passive Voice
- Past Participles                       - Participle Clauses                     - Complex Noun Phrases
- Direct & Reported Speech      - Relative Clauses                       - Conjunctions
- Modal Verbs                            - Imperative Clauses                   - Prepositions for expressing cause and effect
- Conditional Sentences            - If – Clauses                               - Phrasal Verbs

Why is learning about grammar important?

The ability to identify, evaluate, and discuss grammatical issues is a core component of developing advanced writing skills. While most students may intuitively know and use basic English grammar correctly, becoming a truly effective writer necessitates more than simply having a subconscious knowledge of grammar. This is especially the case as students start to move away from the simple writing tasks that characterize primary school towards the more complex writing styles of secondary and tertiary education. These more advanced environments of education present students with a wealth of new writing styles and text types that all display their own subtle patterns of grammatical features. Consequently, successful writing is no longer only a question of using grammar correctly: a writer must now also use grammar skillfully to give credibility and professionalism to his/her texts.

Cognitively, the development from primary school writing into the more complex styles is the most challenging task that children face in their entire development as writers. Hence, this also tends to be the point at which students are in danger of stagnating, falling behind, or even being lost in the education system. To ensure that students develop successfully as writers, it is immensely important that they are equipped with plenty of conceptual tools for addressing grammar.

Developing a meta-language early is empowering for student writers, because it facilitates their development as “designers” of their own language. Rather than only being passive followers of rules, they become skillful in examining both their own and others’ language use objectively. Not only does conscious grammar knowledge enable them to identify and describe grammatical patterns, but it also authorizes them to reflect on their own language choices and to actively improve the clarity and precision of both their sentences and texts.
